New to Fitness? Start Here
Starting at the gym does not have to feel intimidating. Here is a simple, supportive guide for new members.
Starting a fitness routine can feel like a big step, especially if you are new to the gym or coming back after a long break. You may wonder what to do first, which equipment to use, what to wear, or whether everyone else already knows what they are doing.
Here is the truth: everyone starts somewhere. You do not need to be in shape before you join a gym. You join a gym to build strength, confidence, energy, and consistency over time.
Start with one simple goal
The best first goal is not losing a certain amount of weight or doing the hardest workout in the room. The best first goal is simply showing up.
Try setting a goal like:
- Visit the gym two times this week.
- Walk on the treadmill for 20 minutes.
- Try one beginner-friendly class.
- Meet with a coach for guidance.
- Learn how to use three machines.
Small goals build momentum. Momentum builds confidence.
Keep your first workouts simple
A beginner workout should feel doable. You should leave feeling successful, not overwhelmed.
A simple first workout could be:
- 5 to 10 minutes of light cardio
- 2 lower-body exercises
- 2 upper-body exercises
- 1 core exercise
- 5 minutes of stretching
Use light weights, rest when needed, and focus on learning the movements. You can always add more later.
Ask for help early
One of the fastest ways to feel more comfortable is to ask a URGE team member or coach for help. A coach can show you how to use equipment, talk through your goals, and help you avoid the guesswork that makes many beginners quit.
If your location offers body composition scans, a scan can also help you set a starting point and track progress over time. Body composition scans are for fitness and wellness tracking only and are not a medical diagnosis.
Try classes when you are ready
Group classes can be a great option for beginners because the workout is already planned for you. The instructor leads the class, the music keeps the energy up, and you can move at your own pace.
Let the instructor know you are new. They can help you modify movements and feel more comfortable.
Do not compare your beginning to someone else’s routine
It is easy to look around and assume everyone else has it figured out. Most people are focused on their own workout. Your job is not to match anyone else. Your job is to keep showing up for yourself.
Make your routine realistic
A realistic routine beats a perfect routine every time. Two workouts per week that you can repeat are better than five workouts that burn you out after two weeks.
Start with what fits your life, then build from there.
